IMPORT WINDOW LIFT MOTOR

Step-by-Step Installation Instructions

Make these three checks to Avoid Warranty Problems!

  1. Make sure you check that glass is not binding.
  2. Make sure you check window switch functions.
  3. Make sure you lubricate the window regulator.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN READ THIS:

It is easy to replace a window lift motor. However you must take proper precautions to assure a safe trouble free installation. Park the vehicle in a level well ventilated area. Set the parking brake to avoid inadvertent movement. There must be enough room to fully open the doors for easy access to the window regulator and window lift motor.
CAUTION: If the vehicle is equipped with a seat belt (safety belt) system which is attached to the door refer to a suitable repair manual to make sure you have the tools skill and knowledge to remove and correctly install such systems. If you do not then seek the services of a professional technician.

REMOVING THE ORIGINAL WINDOW LIFT MOTOR:

1. Make sure the power to operate the door locks window lift motors and radio speakers or other electrical devices is off to prevent personal injury short circuits or other damage.
2.Carefully remove interior door handles and trim which might interfere with removing the inner door trim panel.
3. Remove any screws which secure the inner trim panel to the door. Such screws are often hidden by carpeting at the lower area of the panel behind arm rest concealed by plastic cover plugs or assist grips.

4. Working carefully to avoid visible damage to painted surfaces use a thin broad flat tool such as a gasket scraper or stiff putty knife to release fasteners which hold the trim panel to the door. Work close to each fastener to avoid damage to the trim panel.
5. Lift the trim panel off of the door observing any retaining tabs on the back of the panel which may be inserted in slots in the door. Also take special care to avoid damage to any wires or switches which may be attached to the trim panel. Unplug the wires and/or remove switches as required.
6. Carefully peel off the plastic waterproofing membrane used to seal all of the openings exposed when the panel is removed. This membrane must be installed intact during the final stages of replacing the window lift motor.
7. Using a wax crayon marking pen or similar method mark the exact location of the window regulator mechanism where it is bolted or riveted to the door.
NOTE: Unless the regulator can be reinstalled at its exact location you will have to align and adjust the mechanism.
If the regulator uses a sector gear and levers to move the glass continue with Step 8. However if it uses cables or a plastic tape with gear teeth on it go to the instructions for "REMOVING & INSTALLING TAPE - TYPE REGULATORS".

8. Inspect regulator to determine if its arm will readily slide off the track on the glass to permit removal of the regulator assembly or if it should be disconnected from the glass by removing fasteners from the glass. If possible operate the regulator to lower the glass to a location where the tracks or fasteners on the glass can be reached through one of the openings in the inner door panel.
9. Using duct tape secure the glass to the door frame so that it will not move or drop when it is disconnected from the regulator.
NOTE: If the regulator cannot be operated to position the glass to a convenient location it will be necessary to lower the glass along with the regulator within the door to a position where the glass can be separated from the regulator.

10. Make sure the power window circuit is turned off (ignition switch OFF fuse removed from the circuit). Disconnect the window lift motor electrical connector within the door.
11. Unbolt the regulator mechanism from the glass on vehicles so equipped. If glass has not been taped in position (as shown in Step 9) raise the glass to about mid-position and use duct tape to secure it there.
12. While supporting the mechanism remove all fasteners which hold the regulator and window lift motor assembly in the door.
CAUTION: DO NOT attempt to remove the window lift motor from the regulator within the door as this would release the spring-loaded arm possibly causing severe personal injury and/or mechanical damage.

13. Remove the regulator and motor assembly through the appropriate access opening in the inner door panel. Disconnect motor breather tube if so equipped.
14. Using a "C" clamp securely clamp the sector gear to the regulator frame.
If the gear cannot be clamped drill a ¼ inch hole through the sector gear and the regulator frame. DO NOT drill close to the gear teeth or other critical places. Insert a ¼ inch bolt through the drilled hole and tighten a nut on the bolt to lock the sector gear and regulator arm from moving.
15. Remove the three bolts which attach the window lift motor to the regulator and remove the motor from the regulator.

INSTALLING THE REPLACEMENT WINDOW LIFT MOTOR:

1. If necessary transfer the wiring harness connector from the original motor to the replacement unit. Use two crimpon splices to make the connections.
Be careful to match the colors of the wires before crimping the splices.
2. Put the original window lift motor in the replacement unit’s carton to assure proper core credit upon return.
3. Position the replacement window lift motor on the regulator and loosely install the three mounting screws. Make sure the gear on the motor engages the sector gear on the regulator with a small working clearance.

5. Apply a small amount of high quality grease to all gears and sliding parts of the regulator. A drop of oil should be applied to each pivot point.
6. Work with the motor and regulator assembly through the access opening in the inner door panel and move it into approximate position while engaging the regulator with the door glass lower track where appropriate.
7. Install but do not tighten all of the fasteners that mount the window lift motor and regulator assembly in the door.
8. Position the regulator assembly so that the alignment marks made in removal Step 7 are exactly matched. Then tighten the fasteners securely.
