Symptoms of ECM Failure

  • Erratic idle speeds

  • Rough idle / engine surging

  • No start / hard start

  • Engine stalling

  • Check engine light on

Do the Job Right

  • Obtain trouble codes from computer.
Carefully match the original and replacement unit rod lengths. Adjust pedal and master cylinder rods, if possible, or reuse the master cylinder rod. If no adjustment or exchange is possible, do not install the replacement unit. All CARDONE loaded brake boosters are preadjusted and ready to be installed.

  • Check vacuum line for gas odor or the presence of moisture.
Use scan tool or “check engine light” to read codes.

  • Check in-line vacuum check valves and filters.
Be sure all valves operate and replace filters as necessary. Hydrovac systems use an in-line check valve that must be at least 10 inches above carburetor base. NEVER eliminate loops in vacuum line as these act as moisture and vapor traps.

  • Check codes to see if ECM is suspect.
    GM Codes 51, 54, 55 Ford Code 15 Chrysler Code 52, 53, 54

  • Check voltage and ground at ECM connector.
Voltage should be no more than 0.5 volts less than the battery voltage.

  • Remove the ECM fuse.
Power must always be off before beginning any work on the ECM.

  • Determine location of ECM.
Service manual will show location of computer.

  • Remove ECM from car.
Check harness and connector for broken wires.

  • If GM, remove prom from defective computer.
    Use a Prom removal tool.

  • Inspect gm prom for damage - bent or broken pins.
If broken or bent, replace with a new PROM.

  • Determine what caused ECM failure.
    Replace/repair defective components and circuits.

Avoid Warranty Problems

  • Use the instructions packed with every ECM.
Failure to follow these instructions will void the warranty.

  • Make sure all trouble codes are repaired.
In addition to the bad ECM, there may also be defective sensors.

  • A digital volt ohm meter (dvom) or “Hot box” must be used to check all relays, solenoids, and injectors for short circuits.
A short circuit will destroy the new ECM and will void the warranty.

  • Check engine harnesses and connectors for corrosion and damage.
Wiggle cables while car is running to see if a fault occurs.
